From July 24th to August 3rd, 2018, I had the pleasure of attending the European BEST Engineering Competition (EBEC) Final in Turin, Italy. Throughout the conference, I worked closely with the organizing committee from the Local BEST Group (LBG), the co-organizer team and the International BEST Board. Having attended many competitions in Canada at both the regional and national levels, I was quick to notice many of the differences and similarities between our Canadian Engineering Competition (CEC) and EBEC. The first, and most obvious difference was the variety in competitions offered to the students. In Canada, our event is… Read More

The 51st edition of Congress was hosted by McGill University in Montreal from January 2-7, 2019. CFES Congress is a national engineering student conference that provides a platform for engineering student leaders from across Canada to help improve the engineering communities and programs at their own schools, and advocate for engineering students on a national level. Every congress has a theme that directs the discussion, congress 2019’s theme was ‘21st Century… Read More

Hi, I’m Philippe or Phil for short, a 4th year electrical engineering student at Western University. In August of 2018 I had the distinct pleasure of spending 10 days in the gorgeous metropolis of Prague, situated in the western Czech Republic. The local chapter of BEST (Board of European Students in Technology) had been generous enough to accept my application for the orbital mechanics course, and since receiving the news in May a state of eager anticipation had occupied my mind. This was especially true since I had been on internship for the past year & was itching to… Read More

The Conference on Diversity in Engineering (CDE) 2018 was held at Ryerson University from November 9-11, and it was an absolute honour to host it. CDE is designed to promote and discuss the importance of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) within the engineering profession. We had a variety of speakers come to host workshops and attend panels so students could have discussions and gather ideas on how to tackle moral issues faced in the engineering field of study and work. This year our theme was “Finding Unity in Community” and helped build a community with 163 students… Read More

Last weekend’s President’s Meeting 2018 was a great success! 59 delegates from 43 schools across the country arrived in Fredricton, New Brunswick on Thursday afternoon and gathered at UNB Fredricton. After checking in, delegates heard opening remarks from President Zenon Kripki, as well as presentations from President’s Meeting 2018’s generous sponsors, the UNB Fredericton Faculty of Engineering and J.D. Irving. Delegates then loaded on to buses to Camp Medley, our accommodation for the weekend, where they participated in conference orientation and meet-and-greet sessions before settling down for the night. Friday and Saturday were… Read More

International Women in Engineering Day (INWED)
As a woman who has recently finished her fourth year of engineering, it is obvious to me and many of my peers that I am not among the majority in engineering spaces. Women studying engineering is barely above the 20% mark, and the number of licenced female engineers in Canada is a mere 13%. Recognizing this, Engineers Canada has championed a 30 by 30 initiative which has the goal of raising the percentage of newly licensed engineers who are women to 30 percent by the year 2030, which the CFES supports. Despite the adversity, being a… Read More

The 10th Engineering Change Lab was held on February 23-24, at the Hatch Mississauga office. The CFES was represented by our President Zenon Kripki and VP Services Kurt Blais. The Engineering Change Lab (ECL) is a social lab movement composed of leaders in private enterprises, universities, NGOs, and other stakeholders, who meet three times a year to collaborate on addressing the systemic challenges facing the profession and “unlocking the engineer’s full potential”. “We envision Canada’s engineering community reaching its full potential by helping steward the application of… Read More
